Art exhibition-highlanes gallery
Before Christmas, the boys and girls completed their artworks based on the theme of what it was like to be a child in 2020. There was a variety of different concepts within the artworks but one theme that seemed to be at the forefront was that of homelessness and the idea of children living either on the streets or in emergency accomodation. It was eye opening to see how in touch the children were with these issues and the empathy they have for other children their age in less fortunate circumstances.
On Wednesday 8th January we travelled back to the Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda to see the wonderful pieces created by the children on display in the art gallery. It was a fantastic experience to have their work on show in a real art gallery. They met again with artist, Claire Halpin who they discussed their finished work with.
As a reward for their efforts and their excellent behavioir outside of school, we paid a visit to the takeaway for a delicious bag of chips 😀

It's christmas Time 🎅
Highlanes Art project
We were joined in class today by artist Claire Halpin. The children began working on their ideas based around the theme of "What symbolises Ireland for an 11/12 year old in 2020". Claire will be back next week to work with the children on their pieces.
Christmas in 5th&6th
We're well and truly into the spirit of Christmas in our classroom. The tree is up and my little elves are busy practicing for their Christmas concert 🎄😊
The highlanes gallery
On Wednesday 20th November, we visited the Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda. Artist Claire Halpin worked with the children while we were there, paying particular focus to some of ths pieces in their current exibition Elliptical Affinities. Using the Visual Thinking Strrategies approach, the children gave their opionions on the pieces they saw. There were some extremely interesting observations made by them. We look forward to welcoming Claire to our classroom in December when the children will create their own masterpieces inspired by what we saw today.
Plants-science
In science we have been learning all about plants. We looked at what a plant needs to survive and how a plant converts sunlight and carbon dioxide to make food for itself through a process called photosynthesis.
We carried out an experiment to show how water travels from the roots to the tips of a plant by osmosis using celery, water and some food colouring. We placed the celery in water mixed with food colouring and left it for 3-4 hours. Below are images of our experiment before and after.

Homework club halloween party
Here we have the Homeork Club crew enjoying some hot chocolate and goodies to end the half term. Looking forward to seeing this great bunch of kids back after Halloween 😊
Halloween Treasure Hunt
The Student's Council came up with a great idea to have a whole school Halloween treasure hunt. With the help of their classmates, they hid over 100 ingredients to our Halloween potion all around the school grounds. The team that collected the most amount of ingredients were the winners. It was a lovely way of linking all the children of the school together and promoting a sense of community spirirt among all our students. Thanks to the Student Council and all of 6th class for running this event.
Maths week 2019
Well done to all the children for participating in maths week this year. Mangahigh was a big hit. We took part in a maths trail around the school grounds, carried out a road traffic survey and finished the week with a maths table quiz.
When friendships go wrong
In SPHE we learned about how we can reslove conflicts within friendships. We read a number of scenarios where friendships encountered a bump in the road. In groups, the children reenacted the scenarios and we discussed possible solutions to the problems or how the charachters could have acted differently and avoided a conflict. There were some oscar worthy performances for sure 😊

Maths - Data
In maths at the moment we are learning all about data. The children conducted surveys and will create barcharts and barline graphs based on the findings of our surveys.
Athletics course comes to a Close
Our 4 week athletic course has come to an end. The children thoroughly enjoyed their time with the coaches. They worked on skills such as balance, coordination and agility. They experimented with the different strand units of athletics working on running, jumping, yhrowing and relay. The class were complimented by their coaches on their enthusiasm, good humour and excellent manners ☺️
Art-The Colour wheel
In art this week, we were focussing on primary, secondary and tertiary colours. Using only the primary colours blue, red and yellow the children created these impressive colourwheels by combining the primary colours in different quantities. EYE think you'll agree with me when I say that the PUPILS outdid themselves 😉
Wednesday 4th Sept
The boys and girls atarted their annual GAA training this morning. We were joined by Duleek/Bellewstown's games development officer, Damien Sheridan who focussed on agility for todays session.
Tuesday 3rd Sept
Today saw our first session with our athletics coaches. The children worked on speed, agility, balance and coordination and had lots of fun in the process. They're looking forward to next week already 😊
